In den vergangenen fünfzehn Jahren hat sich die Struktur der Medienwelt grundlegend verändert und unterliegt mittlerweile einem stetigen Innovationsprozess, dessen Ende und Entwicklung nur schwer absehbar sind. Dies hat Auswirkung auch auf die Unterrichtsgestaltung in der Schule. Bedingt ist das vor allem durch die sogenannten Neuen (computerbasierten) Medien. Traditionelle Medien wie Folien, Tafel, Kreide werden zunehmend von technischen Medien rund um den computing device verdrängt. Daher sollen diese "konservativen" Medien in dieser Arbeit nicht ausführlicher, als für Vergleiche notwendig, vorgestellt werden. Im Gegensatz dazu werden vornehmlich die Neuen Medien und deren Verwendung im Unterricht behandelt. Aus diesem Dualismus ergibt sich, dass nicht lediglich die Klassifikation, sondern auch die Verwendung von Neuen Medien an sich unter neuen Gesichtspunkten analysiert werden muss.
Dies lässt folgende Fragestellungen in den Vordergrund treten:
Nach welchen Kriterien unterscheidet guy Arten von Medien und was once sind überhaupt "neue" oder "alte" Medien?
Wie stellt sich das Angebot von bestimmten Arten der Neuen Medien dar und wie werden diese untereinander klassifiziert?
